Divorce can be one of the most emotionally and legally complex transitions you’ll ever face. At The Law Office of Kristen Bishop Ames, we believe that preparation—both emotionally and practically—can make all the difference. With over a decade of experience guiding clients through the process, Kristen shares the top three steps she recommends for anyone starting this journey.

Before you start the process and throughout the process:

1. Stay off social media

It may be tempting to vent or post updates during such an emotional time, but your social media activity can be used against you in court. Even seemingly harmless posts can be taken out of context. Your safest bet? Stay silent online during divorce proceedings.

2. Be mindful of your communication

Text messages, emails, and voicemails can all become exhibits in a courtroom. Approach every written word as if a judge might read it one day. Be direct, thoughtful, and avoid letting emotions drive the conversation, especially when communicating with your spouse or co-parent.

3. Secure your digital presence

Protect your privacy by updating all passwords, especially for shared accounts, email, banking, and cloud services. If possible, create a brand-new email account for legal and private matters. Don’t forget to clear your browser cache and log out of any devices the other party may still have access to.

The Right Questions Can Save You Time, Money & Stress

Choosing the right divorce attorney is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. To ensure you find someone who aligns with your needs, values, and communication style, here are a few essential questions to ask during your consultation:

  • - What is your experience with cases like mine?

  • - What is your approach to cases like mine?

  • - What is your communication style, and how often will I hear from you?

  • - How are fees and billing handled?

  • - What should I expect during the first 30 days of the case?

Every family is different, and so is every divorce. If you're considering starting the process or need answers, we're here to help.
